TT 01 - Simple, Streamlined Earned Value Management for Microsoft Project Explore the latest software solution from forProject Technology, Inc. (FTI) providing “simple, streamlined earned value management for Microsoft Project”. Although Microsoft Project is by far the most widely-used planning and scheduling tool, there are some who believe that it cannot support an effective Earned Value Management System (EVMS) process. We beg to differ.
This presentation will demonstrate how FTI’s forProject™ software expands the capabilities of Microsoft Project to support government and industry Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) guidelines including ANSI 748-A and OMB A-11. We will also address the reasons organizations sometimes struggle with EVMS implementation using Microsoft Project and show how our tools and implementation approach help to address these issues. Using both desktop and web-based modules, the forProject™ software works seamlessly with Microsoft Project to support EVMS requirements. With forProject™ software, your organization can quickly implement EVMS capabilities using the Microsoft tools you already know, avoiding an expensive migration to so-called “high-end” EVMS tools. The result? Faster implementation, reduced training and deployment costs and higher user acceptance are the benefits you can achieve. Whether your organization is facing new EVMS requirements or you are looking for ways to simplify or streamline your existing EVMS process, you will be interested to see our latest technology and to learn how you can implement an effective EVMS using Microsoft Project. TT 03 - Automating PM Reporting With Dekker TRAKKER Project managers face mounting requirements for large and complex project performance, financial and earned value management reports on a frequent and recurring basis. Despite the proliferation of information technology and reporting options, the preparation and re-working of various PM reports occupies a growing percentage of project managers’ work days, reducing available time for resolution of project implementation and customer relations issues. The situation is worsened by the perennial shortage of skilled financial and project control analysts to help in the reports’ design and preparation, and the consequent errors that often creep in. Finally, much of the time used in the preparation of many PM reports is spent in manually transcribing financial system output documents to customer or senior management specified reporting formats, another time-consuming and error-generating process. Mr. Hallett and co-presenter Tammy Wyatt will demonstrate new techniques they have introduced at ManTech International to automate complex and time-consuming project reporting tasks using the Dekker TRAKKER Enterprise Project Management System, integrated with ManTech’s Project Costing System and other common applications. The presentation will feature recent and successful application of TRAKKER’s reporting engine and MS Excel interface to complicated budgeting and forecasting tasks, estimates to complete, project burn rate calculations, graphics-based program portfolio dashboards, and automated porting of project data to MS Powerpoint presentations.

TT 05 - De-mystifying the interpretation of Earned Value Reports For years, EV has been synonymous with overwhelming acronyms, complex forecasting techniques and complex compliance-type reports. This paper examines in detail, the key metrics being measured by EV and more importantly how to interpret them. Learn how and when to use performance indicators, efficiency factors, trending information and EV forecasts. Standard and advanced reporting techniques are discussed including the well-accepted DoD CPR 1-5 reports. Dan Patterson, PhD PMP Dan Patterson is Director of Earned Value for Primavera – a global leader in project risk management. Dan has over fifteen years of project management experience and is an expert in PPM product development, specifically in the field of project portfolio, risk and EV analytics. A thought leader in enterprise project management, Dan has published numerous papers and materials on the topic. Before joining Pertmaster, Dan was responsible for the overall development and product marketing of project management applications for Welcom, a project management software company in the US.
TT 06 - Integrity and Traceability: The CPM Network as the basis for integrated project performance The critical path network has always been the basis for sequencing the work and duration of activities to accomplish a specific project against a schedule. It is also the foundation for establishing the performance measurement baseline (PMB) in earned value management against which accomplishment is measured. Over the last several years, contractors and software vendors in the project management arena have realized the importance of integrating the components of schedule, cost, technical performance and risk. This is usually achieved through a modularized approach where project stakeholders from various disciplines map, integrate, validate, approve and then process data from multiple sources, which is heavily reliant on policies and procedures. Through this method the essential link between the project network and cost performance information oftentimes is broken, requiring after-the-fact reintegration of project information that oftentimes cannot be reconciled. This session will demonstrate how solutions offered by Safran take a different approach to project performance, which is to integrate and consolidate all relevant performance information through a single software application with the roject network serving as the basis for collecting all relevant performance data. Safran manages earned value performance and collects actual costs on the schedule network, and calculates complex costs from the project resources against a controlled baseline. This maintains the link between schedule, cost, and performance. This approach has been used in Europe for over 15 years using Safran software on some of the largest projects in the world, particularly in the oil and gas, large construction, and the shipbuilding industries. Though lacking the formality of externally directed reporting requirements, these industries apply stringent project discipline and performance requirements delivering projects on time and below projected cost, thus improving their return on investment. Matt Pitstick Safran North America, LLC Matt Pitstick is currently the Chief Technology Officer of Safran North America, LLC, the exclusive representative of Safran Software Solutions of Norway for sales, support and marketing serving the United States, Canada and Mexico. His involvement with project management tools and procedures began when he was at Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company working in the Central Program Performance Management Tools group. His responsibilities were to implement, configure, deploy and maintain project management systems for 50+ programs ranging in size from one million to multibillion dollar efforts. Matt went on to work for C/S Solutions, Inc., which was the manufacturer of wInsight, an earned value analytical and reporting tool. There he performed such tasks as consulting, support, quality assurance, training and documentation on all product lines, and was the technical manager for the wInsight Dashboard product. TT 08 - Turning EV Data into Information There seems to be many in every company that use the Earned Value Data. Many in the project organization input budgets, schedules and completion data (earned value) but seldom have the opportunity to see the metrics, and use the EVM information to help do their job. Information is data within a context that allows it be used effectively. This presentation will show ways to present information (not just data) to a CAM, project or program manager, a resource manager, department manager or executive. Including;
This presentation will end with methods for disseminating this information. Including;
In other words, the user no longer has to go looking for information; it is now delivered to them. The discussion will be supported by the demonstration of Planview’s MPM version 3.2 and the MPM Performance Manager.

TT 09 - Capital Planning & Investment Control – An Automation Solution
To make effective capital planning and investment control decisions, executives must provide, at an early stage in their portfolio’s life cycle, a complete long-term vision combined with effective planning and execution. Executives need to formulate a balanced enterprise portfolio that takes into account risks, returns, and business goals. This capital planning effort relies on a solid repeatable process and the gathering of accurate and complete data. Since 1996, following the introduction of the Clinger-Cohen Act (formerly known as the Information Technology Reform Act), US Federal Government agencies have been required to use “a disciplined capital planning and investment control (CPIC) process to maximize the value of and and assess and manage the risks of the information technology acquisitions.” (OMB Circular No. A-123 revised) It is as a result of these complex demands and the challenging compliance environment created that Microsoft and Robbins-Gioia have teamed together to provide a collaborative technology based approach to solving this problem. It is recognized by many in contracting and within the government itself that existing solutions do not completely resolve the complex challenges involved. While it is true agencies have been providing reporting and response to this Act’s requirements since 1996, the process can at times be arduous and inefficient. The Microsoft solution platform provides an excellent collaborative tracking, monitoring, reporting and delivery capability to support the integration of process and automation and in turn to provide a complete, holistic and easy to use CPIC capability.

TT 11 - PM Metrics Schedule Detective: You Now Have Time For Analysis
I have been a scheduler for 15 years and I hate it when someone knows more about my schedule than I do. Putting on my analyst hat, when a schedule or many schedules come my way, how do I make sense of them quickly? More important, how do I come up with the questions I will need to ask? Over the years I have developed the Schedule Detective to help me do a better job. It runs hundreds of tests, in seconds, and gives me the information I need to analyze a schedule regardless of whether I am the scheduler or the customer. This presentation will show the large amounts of information that is available in the schedule and how to sift through it to see the “Forest for the Trees”. Analysis requirements are different from project to project and within the same project from phase to phase. The Schedule Detective does the grunt work by extracting a wide spectrum of information from the project schedule. Hundreds of queries can be performed on thousands of activities in less then a minute. The information is organized into multiple levels and geared towards producing reports. Most analysis is one dimensional in that it takes a snapshot of the schedule. The Schedule Detective, however, also discerns trends over time and extrapolates performance into the future. Even though the Schedule Detective currently analyzes only MS Project Schedules, the presentation is filled with a large amount of information that every scheduler or manager can use.
